The Roman Legion was one of the finest fighting forces the world has known. Wooden swords are not unique to one culture or the other. The ability to train safely facilitated the wide-spread use of wooden weapons the world over, because they limited training injuries to mere blunt-force injuries - bruises, aches, and a cracked bone were preferable to bleeding, possible dismemberment, and potential death.
