The design tells two stories at once. The thistle, Scotland's national flower since the 13th century and the reign of Alexander III, has long been the proud emblem of a nation that refuses to be tamed. Woven alongside it are the endless square knot patterns of the Shield Knot, ancient Celtic symbols thought to offer protection from evil spirits.
