Rude boy, Rudie & Rudi are slang terms that originated in Jamaican street-culture in the 1960s. In the late 1970s the 2 Tone Ska-revival in the UK saw the terms rude boy & rude girl among other variations being used to describe fans of the genre in the mainstream pop-culture. The terms are applied in a similar way to contemporary terms such as gangsta & badman. The original rude boys, like the UK mods, were sharp dressers who wore suits & pork-pie hats. They were influenced by Afro-American jazz & soul music. The American cowboy/gangster movies were also a great influence on the rude boy attitude & style.
They were notorious for provoking trouble in the dance halls, where they would disrupt the sets of rival DJs (this practice was known as Hall Crashing). This earned them some criticism from grass-roots & mainstream Jamaican artists.
