Metropolis (released in 1927) is regarded as an early masterpiece of German expressionist science-fiction. It was directed by Fritz Lang & written by his wife Thea Von Harbou. It was a silent film & was produced in the Babalsberg Studios by UFA, during the Weimar-period in Germany. It tells the tale of a future dystopia where society is beset by the struggle between a technologically- controlling rich-elite & a rebellious slave-worker class. It had a mixed response upon it’s’ release; some praised its’ technological brilliance while others criticized its’ naivety & communist-sympathies.
Due to commercial considerations, the film was shortened in subsequent years & many attempts to restore the original have been made. A new version of the film complete with soundtrack was shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001. The fully-restored & re-mastered film has since been publicly screened in Berlin & Frankfurt in 2010.
