In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachasso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." After the collapse of exclusive trade with the East, Bohemian glass dominated the European market, severely impacting Venice's trade economy. In response, Venice produced richly colored decorative glass, with Millefiori being a prominent example. Traders who had been engaging in bead trade with Africa crafted cylindrical glass beads from Millefiori glass and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
