The name "lotus (蓮華)" is said to come from the shape of a single scattered lotus petal. This is a classic ceramic soup spoon, excellent for scooping rice, soup, and side dishes, is a staple on dining tables throughout Asia.
Beautifully crafted by skilled craftsmen in Iga, Mie Prefecture, these lotus spoons complement Japanese dining tables and cuisine. A perfect match for earthenware Japanese tableware such as donabe hot pot.
Its size and texture are designed well and comfortable to scoop and put in the mouth. The unique shape of the end of the handle is inspired by a butterfly resting on a petal. Though small in size, these pieces evoke the richness of the clay and the warmth of the artisan's hands.
Hand-thrown using traditional techniques, Iga-ware uses clay and natural glazes local to the region which are extremely resistant to heat and react well to repeated firing. Iga clay offers an elevated level of hardness while the pebbles in the clay result in natural character and texture. Each glaze has its own character, and it inspires us to elevate the whole presentation and dining experience.
Due to the handcrafted quality of these products, individual differences in shade, gloss & size of glaze are to be expected.
Before use, place them in a pot of rice water and boil for about 10 minutes to seal the pores. The starchy film that forms on the surface makes them resistant to stains and odours.
