A colorful assortment of small Japanese sweets inspired by the seasonal beauty of Mikanohara, an old poetic place name referring to the north bank area of the Kizu River in what is now Kyoto (Souraku District). Nearby once stood the ancient capital Kuni-kyo, moved there from Heijo-kyo by Emperor Shomu in 740, a place celebrated in the Manyoshu for spring blossoms and autumn maple leaves.
