This t-shirt features a design celebrating the Twisted Wheel northern soul nightclub in Manchester. The Twisted Wheel was the venue most commonly associated with the UK Northern Soul scene of the 1970s and was a hub of the earlier Mod scene in the early 1960s. Prior to that, the venue had been a beatnik coffee-bar in the 1950s called The Left Wing. In 1963 it was turned into a music-venue when it became leased by two Manchester businessmen, Ivor & Phil Abadi. Initially, the club hosted live music mainly at the weekends and held Disc Only nights through the week. By September 1963 the Abadi brothers were promoting all-nighters at the venue, employing DJ Roger Eagle, a collector of imported American soul, jazz & R+B. This combination greatly fuelled the clubs’ reputation as a main hub of the nascent UK Mod scene.
