In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." After the collapse of exclusive trade with the Orient and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venice created this colorful decorative glass as a countermeasure to the economic blow. Millefiori glass became a hallmark of this innovation. Merchants who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa crafted cylindrical glass beads from these Millefiori glasses, which were then transported to Africa as trade beads.
