This necklace is open and light weight for its size. The 28 inch chain is unusual and well made. It is raw brass which time has given a natural antiquing. The 3. 5 x 3 inch floral, cross like pendant holds nine, black cut paste stones in raw brass bezels. The 1. 25 inch bail also holds two black cut glass stones. The top bail stone has a crack in it, adding to the aged look. This damage has been reflected in the price.
It could be considered a mourning piece, but with the age of electricity in its infancy, colored stones, including black, were being used in everyday fashion at the time. After the turning of the century, being worn as mourning jewelry was up to the wearer.
There are no marks or manufacturer name on this piece. The clasp is contemporary and has been added to the original necklace.
This metal necklace is circa 1920 and made by a high end costume jewelry maker of the time. The first half of the 20th century was the heyday for well made costume jewelry sold from fine department stores to Woolworth, usually made in Europe or the United States. The manufacture and quality of costume jewelry deteriorated in the latter part of the century making this era the last with enduring products.
