This beautifully crafted tenugui is made from 100% linen using traditional techniques. With a texture almost like silk, the fabric is lightweight, smooth, and gentle against the skin. It offers excellent absorbency and quick-drying properties—drying faster than cotton—making it both hygienic and practical for everyday use, travel, or outdoor activities. Use it as a hand towel, handkerchief, or wrap it around your neck as a light scarf for sun protection.
Founded in 1863 in Nara Prefecture, Okai Mafu is a fifth-generation, family-run company. The region has long been known for Nara Sarashi, a traditional hemp fabric that is handwoven and carefully crafted. Today, Okai Mafu remains one of the few makers preserving these time-honoured techniques from the Edo period.
A tenugui is a traditional Japanese hand towel, typically measuring around 35 × 90 cm (14" × 35"). Its versatile design makes it useful as a washcloth, dishcloth, headband, decorative textile, or for wrapping items such as bottles. The long edges are finished, while the short ends are left unhemmed, allowing for natural fraying over time. Loose threads can be trimmed, or left as is to develop a soft, organic edge.
Please note that the colour may fade or run when washing. Refrain from using chlorine bleach.
