A superb quality early to mid-18th century Georgian oval metamorphic dining table of small proportions (sits up to 6 persons). England, circa 1740s.
Crafted from the finest, densest Cuban mahogany, this is a superbly drawn table of singular refinement. Its square-profile cabriole legs — an elegant and unusual detail fashionable in the 1720s and closely associated with the Roberts family, Royal cabinetmakers — speak to the considered taste of its making. The swing-leg drop-leaf action allows the piece to move effortlessly between roles: folded, it stands as a slender console, perfect for lamps and a casual arrangement of objects; opened, it becomes a dining table perfectly scaled for intimate candlelit dinners and close company. Simple in form, but rare in the quality of its design and the ease of its versatility.
