Quetzaltenango (Xela) Guatemala Woman's Huipil --- This Xela huipil is brocaded with birds (peacock or quetzal?) figures, diamonds and other geometric patterns on a floor loom. The two flowered randa down the front and neck design are machine embroidered and are typical of Quetzaltenago Huipils. Base material is cotton and likely some other mixed threads. I am not sure if it is woven in Xela or another village for finishing and use in Xela.
Condition: Moderately good used condition. The huipil shows some wear and a few loose threads. Neck embroidery is quite worn (I'd suggest putting velvet finish on or embroidered button stitch, but Ok as is). The black base portion of the huipil shows some even fading. Sides seams open (could be easily sown closed). Panels are hemmed.
Huipil Dimensions:
- Width: 36 inches shoulders
- Length: 28 inches
- Neck: 6.5 inches wide by 3 inches deep . Style: oval
- Weight: Approx 1.7 pound
* Remember the huipil's width should be at least 1.5 to 2 times your shoulders width, to allow for fitting your frame and to cover part of your upper arms.
