The technique for creating Chevron beads was invented by Maria Barovier on Murano Island, Italy, in the late 1400s. While Venetian bead-making techniques often draw from ancient methods, Chevron beads are unique to Venice. Chevron beads can feature up to 10 layers, with blue being the most common color; red, green, and black beads are rarer. The technique later spread to the Netherlands. "Chevron" means "zigzag" in Italian, and these beads are also known as "star beads" or "rosetta beads."
