Millefiori, meaning "a thousand flowers" in Italian, became prominent when Venice sought to counter the market dominance of Bohemian glass after the collapse of exclusive trade with the East. Venetian artisans created these vibrant and decorative glass pieces, which were then crafted into tubular beads by traders and taken to Africa as trade beads. In Africa, they are known as Cha-Cha-Soo beads.
