In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the monopolization of the European market by Bohemian glass, Venice, which was significantly impacted economically, developed a variety of decorative glass as a countermeasure. A prime example of this is Millefiori glass. Traders who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa crafted cylindrical glass beads from Millefiori and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
